5 mistakes parents make when saving nursery photos

I've made most of these myself, which is how I know they're easy to make. None of them feel like a mistake at the time. You only notice months later, when you go looking for a photo and it's either gone or too small to use. Here are the five I see most, and what to do instead.

1. Assuming the nursery will keep them

This is the big one. The photos live on the nursery's account, not yours, and your access is tied to your child being on the register. When they leave, that access usually gets switched off. Sometimes on the last day, sometimes a few weeks later, but it goes.

The fix: treat the app as where photos start, not where they live. Get them onto your own computer well before any leaving date.

2. Screenshotting instead of saving the originals

Screenshotting feels quick. The problem is a screenshot only captures what's on your screen, at screen size, often with the app's buttons around the edge. You're saving a small, lower-quality copy of a much bigger photo.

The fix: save the actual file, not a picture of it. The full-size original might be five or ten times the size of a screenshot, and that detail is what you need for prints later.

3. Saving everything to one phone with no backup

If every photo you care about sits in one phone's camera roll, you're one puddle, one theft or one dropped handset away from losing the lot. Phones are the most likely thing in your life to break or go missing.

The fix: get the photos onto a computer, then keep a second copy somewhere else. A cloud account like iCloud or Google Photos counts as that second place.

4. Leaving them sitting in the app until access is gone

"The login still works, so there's no rush." I told myself exactly this, and then the login stopped working. Once access ends, you can ask the nursery to email photos over, but staff are busy and what comes back is rarely everything.

The fix: if your child has left and the app still opens, treat it as borrowed time. Pull everything down this week, not eventually.

5. Meaning to sort them "later" and never doing it

The photos are technically saved, but they're scattered across a phone, a laptop and three different folders, and you've never actually tidied or backed them up. Later never comes. We all know how that goes.

The fix: make it one short job. Put everything in a single clearly named folder, copy it to the cloud and an external drive, and you're done. An afternoon now beats a panic later.
