Two of my kids have been at nurseries that used different apps. One was on Famly, the other on ParentZone. If your nursery picks one of these, you don't really get a vote, so this is less "which is better" and more "here's what you're actually getting".
Both do roughly the same job. They're the way the nursery sends you photos, tells you about naps and nappies, shares the odd note, and bills you. They just go about it a bit differently.
What ParentZone is like
ParentZone (the one from Connect Childcare) leans practical. The daily diary is the heart of it: meals, sleeps, activities, the occasional observation against early years goals. Photos come through as part of those updates rather than a big gallery.
It feels built for the admin side first. Invoices and payments are tidy. Messages from the nursery land clearly. The photos are there and they're lovely, but the app treats them as bits of a daily report, not the main event.
What Famly is like
Famly feels a touch more modern to use. The newsfeed is the first thing you see, and it's quite photo-led, so you tend to get a steady stream of pictures with short captions. Daily check-ins, learning journeys and messages all sit in there too.
Day to day it's pleasant. Tapping through a busy week of photos is genuinely nice. Famly also runs in a few countries, so you might see it as Famly.de if your nursery is in Germany. Same app underneath, different login page.
The thing they have in common
Here's the bit that surprised me. Both apps are happy to show you hundreds of photos and make it a real pain to save more than one at a time.
On both, the usual route is: open a photo, tap save, go back, open the next one, save again. Do that for a term's worth of pictures and you'll lose an evening. The full-size originals are sitting right there on the server, but neither app gives you a "download everything" button. That's not a Famly thing or a ParentZone thing. It's both.
If you want the originals off either app without the one-by-one slog, NurseryDownloader is a Chrome extension that grabs them in bulk straight to your laptop. It works with Famly, Famly.de and ParentZone (and Bright Horizons FamilyApp), so it doesn't much matter which one your nursery chose. It's a laptop or desktop tool, not a phone app, and nothing gets uploaded anywhere.
So which should you care about?
Honestly, neither is worth losing sleep over. They're both decent. If I'm splitting hairs:
- ParentZone is a little stronger on the nursery-admin side, invoices and reports.
- Famly is a little nicer for casually scrolling photos.
The real point is the same for both: the pictures live in someone else's app, and one day your child moves on. Get the originals onto your own computer while you've still got easy access. That's the difference that'll matter to you in ten years, not which logo was on the login screen.
