Parents ask me this all the time: how long will the nursery hang on to my child's photos? The honest answer is that nobody can give you a single number, and you shouldn't plan around getting one. Here's how it actually works and why your own copy is the only thing you can really count on.
It depends, and that's the real answer
There's no national rule that says a nursery keeps your photos for X years. It comes down to two things: the nursery's own policy, and the app they use.
The app matters because ParentZone, Famly and Bright Horizons FamilyApp each have their own setup for storage and how long old accounts stick around. Some keep data while the contract with the nursery runs. Some clear out former families on a schedule. The nursery often doesn't control the fine detail of this themselves.
What's fairly consistent is that your access tends to end when your child leaves. The photos might still exist on a server somewhere for a while, but you usually can't reach them. Existing isn't the same as you being able to see them.
GDPR actually pushes the other way
Here's the bit that surprises people. Data protection rules don't make nurseries keep your photos. If anything, they nudge the other way.
Under GDPR, an organisation isn't meant to hold personal data for longer than it needs to, and photos of your child count as personal data. So a nursery acting properly will have a retention policy and will delete things after a set period. That's not them being unhelpful. It's them following the rules.
Which means "the nursery will have them if I ever need them" is a shaky assumption. They might. They might also have deleted them, entirely correctly, a year after your child left.
What this means for you
None of this is cause for panic. It's just a reason to do one simple thing: keep your own copy.
- While your child is still at nursery, save the photos somewhere you control
- Save the full-size originals, not the shrunk versions you get saving to a phone
- Back them up in more than one place so a lost phone isn't a disaster
On a laptop or desktop, NurseryDownloader downloads the original photos from ParentZone, Famly, Famly.de and Bright Horizons FamilyApp straight to your computer, with nothing uploaded anywhere. The free trial covers 20 downloads, which is plenty to check it does what you need.
The nursery's photos are theirs to keep or delete on their own timetable. Yours are yours forever, but only if you've actually saved them. Don't leave it on someone else's system and hope.
